The Opening Day of the Bowling Club is always the biggest day of the year. Everything done since the Flag was taken down in October is geared towards opening the club back up in April. We had a little over 7 months to complete a number of improvements and I have to say the club was looking great yesterday. Number 1 on the list was to spend a lot of money on the green. The bowling green is the Club's centrepiece and David has done a great job over the winter; helped along by a bit of Mother Nature's frost. The moss is gone and you could see with a bit of heat; a bit of rain and a lot of playing - you can see how its going to improve over the summer.
The next big one was the hill. This had become so overgrown you could hardly see into the club when you walked along Queens Drive. It was a monumental job. Thorns and bushes that were over 6 feet high. A Rhododendron which was 8 feet high covered half of the hill. But with a lot of hard work we have managed to see the hill again. The benefits are massive. You can see in the club fro the road. There is now so much more light getting onto the green, which will improve it hugely. And then there is the latest addition added on Friday night. A tombstone for the Roddy Deadron. On it has a line "May you compost in peace". Its a fitting tribute to a well loved plant but it had to go. Who says there is no humour at a Bowling Club :-)
There has also been a number of things done in the clubhouse from painting to the laying of a new carpet. The place was looking great. But what was most important about the winter was keeping the buzz going at Hampden through the winter. It was great to see everyone out yesterday. Well attended and we managed to get 18 of us on the green for a wee triples after the flag was unfurled. It was great to see everyone enjoying themselves in the sunshine. Mother nature shined down on us again. Thanks to all the visitors that came along and for Graham from Bowls Scotland who did the reply for the visitors which was great. There was so many good photos - have a look at the Facebook page. It was a stunning day.
So onto the next big events. Next Saturday we have our 2 Bowls Mixed Triples and then on the 29th April we will have our TryBowls Friends & Family Day. Its going to be a cracker - lets hope for some sunshine! More to come on that.
Here's a wee photo I love from yesterday and have saved it for today. It was a young lady that opened the green. She had a fab day.
Have a great week
