So how important is the Try Bowls Campaign? Its funny but up until January this year we hadn't even heard about it. Both Jim (Mr President - yes there are a few) and I had to swallow our words. What is Bowls Scotland doing to attract people into the game? Laura (Our Development Officer) replied with a very simple answer. Have you signed up to the Try Bowls Campaign? Its a Nationwide publicity campaign thats been running for a the last few years trying to get people into the game. You would have received a letter about it....
So in past years we have missed it. This year will be different. On Sunday we will have an open house for everyone from the community to come along and have a go at bowls. We have new equipment to showcase bowls in a different way. Our Bowlsparc equipment was used at the venues of the Commonwealth Games and I'm reliably informed ended up with queues of over 30 minutes long. We will also have on offer some Hampden hospitality - a bit of humour, history and off course a reasonable priced bar. What more do you want on a Sunday afternoon? I have also just looked up the website and we are top of the list when you put in Glasgow (Happy Days).
This is all part of the investment in trying to attract more members into the club. We had another first this week when we signed off the new Hampden Banner. Its really good and hope to position about 4 of them around the club facing the passing train, car and foot traffic to let people know what Hampden has to offer. There are so many places for these banners to go. On the back wall facing the train - c8 trains an hour. Facing the main road along Queens Drive, which is a busy main road. Facing the Kingsley Gardens where so many have a lie out in the sun (when we get it) and walk past on the way to Queens park. So hopefully it does the trick. I'm sure there will be a photo or two when they go up :-)
Finally there was the first competition of the season yesterday. Photos are online (thanks to Alan) of the 2 Bowls Triples, which was won by Ian Williams, Pat Hunter and John Douglas. A great victory and gets the Hampden season off to a flyer. Big congrats! Here's hoping that a new starring triples that can get stuck into the forthcoming Cathcart League. Yup we are on a mission this season to get a bit higher up the table. Now if we were to pull off a Leicester- esque rumble of the league that would be something else wouldn't it? Hampden anywhere near the top of the league - you can but dream :-)
Cheers
