Today was HBC's birthday. A day to celebrate a 111 years of history. We have put together a wee collection of memories at the entrance as you can see above. It was a chance for people to come along and share a beer and a sausage roll. It was about the club. It has stood the test of time, which is a great achievement in itself.
To celebrate the Hampden trilogy was completed. Not quite Lucasfilm but if you go onto YouTube and/or Facebook you will see a collection of videos that nearly every club can relate too. Our History - the DNA of the club. Our Community - without people the club would not exist. Our Future - what will it take for the Club to still be here for the next 100 years. Every club and organisation has a similar story, so it was my birthday present to the Club to put our story in a place for everyone to see.
So how do we do we ensure that we are here in a 100 years? Well it so important in this day and age to embrace social media. A quote from Ferris Bueller "Life moves pretty fast, if you don't stop an look around once in a while, you could miss it". Now that is a quote from the 1980s but it so true of today. We need to keep up with the modern world and get our message out there. There is something special going on at Hampden Bowling Club. We just need to get people in the door to see it.
We have more communications going out than ever before. Its great seeing the members wanting to learn how to access Facebook or find out what is going on in the website. From an external world it is starting to pay huge dividends. For example we have another first this week. We are a Bowls Scotland Level 1 Development Club and our videos were shown to Rob at Bowls Scotland (he looks after their communications). One phone call later and a couple of draft emails, we we had our first article on the Bowls Scotland website. There are c900 member clubs in Scotland and nearly 90,000 members, so it is fantastic that we have the top billing news item on the website from our little club. It is our enthusiasm to attract new members that makes us a good story. It is one that will keep going through 2016.
One of the other key things this year is to refurbish the club. We went up to Milngavie Bowling Club this week to see the fantastic refurbishment that they had done last year as part of their 125 year anniversary. Bob and Jimmy were superb hosts and showed us around. They spent 5 years raising the money for the refurb and convincing a 270 strong membership that it was money well spent. Hats off to them and their Committee. They gave us so much inspiration on the lounge and snug area. It works so well and gave us so many ideas for our club.
We are two weeks out from Opening Day. The Club has had so much work on it and is really starting to look great. Lots to look forward too.
Cheers
