On Friday night Hampden added a new night to its calendar. One that would add a new string to our bow and offer something a wee bit different to the members. The intrepid four on the wee organising committee had some week putting it altogether but like all new events we pulled it off with some meticulous planning. It also had some useful learning points.
1) When trying to organise a whisky tasting do the maths on the number of glasses you need. What was quite funny was that last week I realised that 30 tickets with 5 whiskies equalled 150 clean glasses. Luckily last year we found a large amount of glasses tucked under the seats and managed to salvage them for future use. They came in very handy. Our dishwasher had a good workout as we ran it a few times to get them sparkling.
2) When offered a an additional feature - accept it without hesitation. Last week Vi asked if we wanted her grandson to bring along the bagpipes. The answer was obviously yes. And we the evening was kicked off in style with a few of Scotland's finest tunes. Well it was the first time that I had seen them in the club.
3) Incorporate something more than just the whisky tasting. On Friday night we managed to fill in the gaps with a darts competition. Very simple. 3 darts, highest score wins a prize. It proved very popular especially as the whiskies were dispatched. Its amazing how competitive people can get :-)
There were 25 on the evening. 5 fantastic whiskies covering 3 regions, some bites to eat, music and some whisky knowledge imparted. It was a bit worrying at one point when I had 6 call offs in the last 3 days however it worked out a perfect number. We raised money for the club and definitely put the format on the map. One I think we will reuse in the future. Thanks to everyone involved in making it such a great night.
So what else have we been up too. Well I went over to the club earlier and the guys were enthralled by the World Indoor Bowls Final. Big congratulations to Paul Foster who won it for the 5th time. A Scot winning a world championship is always a great event!
This week is Committee week as well as meeting up with Laura from Bowls Scotland. There is lots to do in advance of the AGM at the end of February. But we are getting on with it. Just one of them is the painting that is going on in the clubhouse. Well done to Bill Shedden for all his hard work. Its looking great.
And one final mention. Its quiz night on Friday. Our usual 1st Friday of the month. Hope to see you there.
All the best for the week.
Cheers
