So last week was all about the Opening Day. It was a superb day and sometimes you need a week to look back at what a great day it was. For starters the sun shone and the photos looked great - tell me you have looked at them on our Facebook page? We had a sweep for the Grand National and all of the tickets were taken happily, with several people left out. What was meaningful about that is that it meant we must have had between 50 and 60 people at the Opening Day. A great number and shows the Bowling Club does have a bit of buzz about it. What was also really good was seeing all the other Opening Days across the country on Facebook and Twitter - its brilliant to see so many club having their big day in the sunshine!
This week the focus has shifted back to how we grow the club membership? Plans are going into overdrive to get people in the door. We have so many ideas but the main one at the moment is our TryBowls events. TryBowls weekend is next weekend around the country and the advert was filmed at Hampden (please look out for it). It was a great day and we hope to get a bit of a kickstart from that. We have our big “TryBowls’ event on Saturday 29th (a certain Football game got in the way at the 3rd Hampden :-) and starting to promote that in a big way. This will pave the way for our other big idea which is our TryBowls Evening. We have put our thinking caps on and when speaking to Denise Connell (Our District Secretary) and she asked if we wanted to do a “Ladies Who Bowls Evening”. We have a small Ladies Section and it would be great to grow the section. So we have come up with a concept to combine this with a TryBowls and coaching evening. So on a Monday night you can come along and enjoy an evening with 3 coaches on the green that caters for all. We have just decided on a date of the 15th May to have our inaugural evening and then each Monday after that.
We are on a mission to improve the club by creating events and coaching evenings to bring in people into the club. This is the foundation of the club. Of course the other one is the #Restore1stHampden crowd funding project. This is the other focus of attention. I have been mega busy working out where to start with this. There are so many ways to get grant funding and have had tonnes of advice which is great. The plans are starting to come together and mega excited to get this going. We have some amazing events going to happen over the summer to fund raise and now its just a matter of getting them in the diary. And of course conversing a few volunteers to help :-)
Another wee plug was the video I shared out on Facebook this week. Here is the youtube link to it. As part of the Queens Park 150th Stephen Watt has done a poem entitled “Home is where the Hampden is”. A great video and here is the link:

You will see the bowling club and rose garden mentioned. There is plenty more coming for the 150th year so we hope to get a wee bounce from that.
Roll on the summer. We need a lot of sunshine. The Bowling Club in the sunshine is such a great place to spend an afternoon or an evening. The doors are open and the more people we get through the better. So here's to a great summer and hope the plans pay off! I'll keep you posted
