This week was the big one. Marking the last big event of the season. Where all the winners are honoured. Where all the runners up getting their recognition for pushing the champions to the end. With over 15 trophies given out covering Club Champions through to Pairs winners and then celebrating our own Glasgow Triples Ladies Champions. Hampden has had a great year. On the night the double act of Jim Peden and Ian Williams expertly handled the awards handouts, several times shake each other hands - they have won a few between them this year :-) With 50 people turning up it was really well attended, which was great to see. There are some great photos on the Facebook page!
My responsibility was the DJ for the evening. So here's the challenge - how do you mix up Black Grape, The Houghton Weavers, Elvis, Barry Manilow, The Trammps, Beach Boys, Pharrell Williams, Michael Jackson..... its a request night so it was some range. Finished off in style with a bit of Loch Lomond and Frank Sinatra. It was a great evening. As part of it I did a wee speech. Here it is. Its a summary of our year and what we need to keep our great little club growing. Enjoy!
"Tonight I thought we would do something a bit different. Tonight is about a celebration. But its not just about those that have won. But its also to celebrate another great season for our club. Its the 111th season and I think its the best one yet
So what am I talking about. Here is just 5 of our highlights.
Some of you may remember our Vice President and Match Secretary parading around this dance floor with a new item of clothing. And yes its on video. Well how good was it to see everyone wearing the HBC top at Closing Day. Everyone remarks on how good it is and how it makes us stand out from the rest.
At the start of the season Jim Peden said if there was one thing to get members in this year was to ‘win a big competition’. Now Leicester had better odds winning the Premier league than any team from Hampden winning a Glasgow Competition. But how good were Kathy, Anne and Jean to win the Glasgow Ladies Triples. Big Congrats Again Ladies!
HBC has also built upon its reputation as being a host for visiting clubs and football fans. In April I had to turn away 200 Hibs fans as we were fully booked. Just read the reviews on the Facebook page!
And we have managed to hold our membership steady - 47 full paying members, 17 social and 9 residents. We are going to be launching our 6+6 recruitment campaign next year and hope to grow our membership.
And finally we had one big mission. If you look on the twitter page its says quite simply “The Hampden Bowling Club is the best wee club in the Southside of Glasgow. Our mission is to tell the world our story... and a have a lot of fun along the way!” Well we have certainly done that. A weekly blog that now has over 20000 words chronicling our year, a Facebook page with over 200 likes and 283 followers on twitter. And the greatest one is still to come. Hampden will be on BBC Radio Scotland on the Out of Doors programme on either the 1st or 2nd Saturday of December. Do you know there are 901k listeners to the station each week and the programme is downloaded in its thousands.
So here is the important bit. This is only possible for two reasons. So can I ask all of the committee to please stand up? On behalf of the membership I would like to thank you for all the hours behind the bar, making events happen, marking scorecards, weeding the garden, organising repairs, listening to Alec Rae at Committee meetings be two agenda points behind….the list is endless..… So can everyone please join me a huge round of applause. “Thank You”.
And the second one - its down to you. So can everyone stand up. You come along each week, enjoy events, work out if your bowls is getting any better, keep coming back, listen to Jim Peden’s sarcasm, John Anderson’s hissy fits and Carole Sleigh’s deathly stare. So can I please ask you to charge your glasses and toast the health of Hampden Bowling Club. “Hampden”.
So here is to the future of Hampden. We are all part of it and the club needs your help to ensure that it has a happy and healthy future. When I said we need to take our story to the world, please please please talk to everyone about us. Get our story out there. Ask your friends and family to come along. Get involved in the running of the club - ask what needs done. I can assure there is a big list!
Cheers
