So what a big game. The best day we have had with the Tartan Army. We had our usual groups - Tranent, Bankfoot, Nethertown and Galashiels. They were great fun and a blast. The First Hampden has not seen this sort of crowd since the big internationals of its heyday. It has been some week getting the club prepared. Between stocking the bar, putting up a gazebo, putting together playlists, keeping the place in order and then the cleanup. These events are a big deal but it brings in much needed money into the club. A massive thanks to Jim Milligan for keeping the bar up and also helping me with the gazebo. Gerry Murphy and John Anderson for being behind the bar and Yvonne for serving out the pies. And the helpers during the day helping keeping the tables cleared and the list ticked off for those attending.
So some of the highlights:
1) Music - Mike Canning managed to get me a playlist and the place was bouncing at points. So much so that we could hardly hear ourselves think.
2) 65 Scottish Fans all in one place have a great time - a great bunch of folk. We even had a fan in called Tom Cruise who had come from Bavaria to see the contest! I am not kidding.
3) The gazeebo - after fighting with it for hours on both Friday and Saturday we didn't use it in the end. Although it did spark an incident in the morning when we were moving and the collected water on the canopy drenched John Anderson. A moment I will never forget and neither have my sides as they were splitting...
4) The lead up to the game with each night putting out a fact about Scotland's record at 1st Hampden. Scotland beat England 3 times with an aggregate score of 17 - 7 and could hold up to 15,000.
Its a great venue and its great to see it being used to its potential. Shame about the stoppage time equaliser but hey ho that's Scotland for you.
So how are we doing in the league. Well the gents were out in the Cathcart league this week and were beaten by Cathcart on a lovely wet evening. The McKellar Trophy played at Giffnock - although we won our tie we didn't beat Stamperland by enough shots to win the overall event. Charlotte McLay went out of the Scottish Ladies Singles in the semi-final 21-12 - a great run unfortunately came to an end. In the Cathcart Seniors League we managed to beat the Mearns Bowling Club.
For info the Kingswood Friendly has been cancelled on the 25th June and will be re-arranged. The TryBowls event is on Monday's and we're now up to 6 new Gents members this year. Now we need to turn to the ladies and see if we can give that a boost too.
Oh and the 3rd 10k was conquered round Rouklen Glen Park on Thursday Night. Proper brutal in torrential rain and a proper hilly route. 7 to go and the next one is next Sunday in the Glasgow Mens 10k.... We are over £500 so far so need to get that motoring..
A mad, brilliant, heartbreaking, busy, mental and shattering week. But well worth it. Onto to the next one.
Cheers
