This week has been a landmark week in the history of our bowling club. On Wednesday we hit the airwaves and was on Radio Scotland for 30 minutes. What was funny was the phone call I got, which went along the lines of "how did you manage to land that"? A proud moment. It was great to listen the programme. You really do get a sense of the place and what bowling means to the members. The honesty, the warmth, the fun and the friendship. The number of times you hear the genuine views that the club is like a second home to them and that bowls is such a big part of their lives.
Rhona, Mark and Chris from the BBC have done an amazing job. The biggest thing that you get from the programme is that this was Mark's first time in a bowling club. Over the course of the couple of hours he was taken through the rules, shown how to play and played a few ends. By the end of it he could fully understand why bowling is so popular. Everyone can have that experience. The only thing you have to do is get in touch with your local club and find out how to have a go. Walk through the front gate and i'm sure it will be one of the best things you will ever do.
For us we hope that it leads to more interest in our club. As Jim said in the documentary we dont need many - 6 Gents and 6 Ladies would be a fantastic addition to our club and keep the membership ticking over. So we need everyone's help to get there. You have heard what the club is about. Everyone can play. Everyone can have the same experience as Mark had on the night. Everyone can get to know the lovely people of Hampden and make new friends. So why not get in touch with us and we can get you a wee visit sorted.
I couldn't leave this blog without a special mention of Peggy and JJ. Both of them are 90 and both of them shared their story. Its one of the biggest reasons that a club like Hampden has to keep going. Peggy wants to still be coming to the club until she is 100. Well we are on a mission to make sure she can do just that!
If you missed it there it will go out again on BBC Radio Scotland on Boxing Day at 6am or you can get it online on the BBC iPlayer. Its called "Our Story".
Cheers
