Autumn is here. The leaves have turned and the bowling club has been bed down for the winter. So you think its just a matter of just cutting it one last time and then you leave it for 6 months? Well its not quite like that. Last Sunday Jim, Ian and a few other members took to the green. With the Tartan Army gone and a 8 hour shift on the Saturday under their belt, they set about green and lifted all the mats out of the ditches on the Sunday. This is one big job and the guys had to put them on pallets leaving David (the greenskeeper) able to bed the green in for the winter. This will include deep coring it, over seeding it and bedding it down - all in the hope that the green has a great winter and by April next year it will be ready for the summer. One key ingredient - frost. Yes the enemy of our green has been wet winters. We need a frost to kill the moss and all other unwanted diseases, which are very difficult to get rid off. So Jack Frost is thoroughly welcomed in our club!
So what else is going on. Well as you know we are a development club and this Saturday we are attending a business planning training session. Ian has kindly volunteered as I'm away and looking forward for the support of Bowls Scotland in helping put our business plan together. There is so much to do and the winter presents the ideal opportunity to get going with some of the ideas. The summer has been hectic but now we can really crack on. Whats our mission to get a good winter, make even more changes and attract new members for next season. It was simply put by Jim Peden in the BBC filming - what we really need is 6 new gents and 6 new lady members to keep the club going. So here is our new tagline - our 6 + 6 recruitment programme.
So do you want to be part of it? Have you read the blog and thought about it? Have you seen the Facebook and thought about giving bowls a go? Our winter programme is great way to find out about the club and meet the people. We have a number of events that you could come along too to see what you think. Our next one is the Halloween Quiz on Friday 28th October from 7.30pm. It's a great event and enjoyed by all. Why don't you pop in and find out what we're all about.
Cheers
