Today we cracked open the attic to clear it out. There was always the chance that we might find a bit of Hampden history up there. A wee treasure from the past maybe or something that we could stick in the archives? I was also told today that legend has it that they used to have committee meetings up there too. Well there were 5 tables and 10 chairs - so maybe the legend is true after all? There were rather old and incredibly dusty. They were only useful for being carted off to Polmadie's Recycling Centre. However we still reckon its true - how they got them up there though is anyone's guess.
Was there treasure? Err well no. We realised that whoever had started to insulate the place had got bored and only done half of it. There were still 8 rolls of insulation still up there in there in the packaging. I wonder how many attics are in the same state? So armed with a torch (yes the lights didn't work) we set about insulating the rest of the attic.
There was a near miss with a large roll of plastic (we have yet to work out why it was there) which weighed about 15kg. Not an easy thing to shift and the Match Secretary nearly became a cropper when we tried to take it out. Luckily the ladder took the brunt of it and the lino flooring has now some further character with a dent in it. Fortunately we have plans to refurb the place. Now we have no option :-)
We then set about clearing out underneath the seating. Now this was a bit more interesting. China sets from the 50s. Macallan Ale pint glasses - I'm pretty sure they don't make it anymore. We even discovered Harp 1/2 pint glasses. Do they still do "Cool Sharp Harp"? Amazing how adverts never leave you. Anyway after 8 car trips to Polmadie we managed to get the place a bit more tidied out. It's amazing how much stuff a club can accumulate. Our little bit of treasure was a photo from 1924.... how cool is that. They had proper moustaches in those days!
Friday was our monthly quiz. About 20 of the members turned to take on the usual format. 4 rounds of 5 questions, where you can play a joker. 10 general knowledge questions to finish. The 1st Round is a picture round and it's so funny watching everyone trying to work out what the question will be. I've been doing this quiz a year and no one has ever played their joker on that round. The quiz went down to the wire with a tie-breaker. I had to think fast for a question so just made one up about how many meters are there is a mile. 1609m by the way. The Match Secretary's team scooped this month's title with a guess of 1730m. Only a wee bit out.
Lots of cool stuff getting organised. We have just bought a new Bowlsparc kit - its basically a really good way to get people interested in the game. That'll be useful for the new season. Then there is the League Cup Final on Sunday so hope that will go well too. Lots of work still to do to to gear up to the new season - a major clearout today and more still to come. I think the place will sparkle by the time opening day comes around. 9th April is not too far away now...
