This week is signals the run-in to the end of the season and Finals day on the 27th and 28th August is hotting up. There are 7 Gents and 4 Ladies trophies up for grabs and thought it would be good to record who is where as we head towards the showdown weekend.
Gents Tournaments
There were 20 entries into the Gents Championship this year and the final four is Chris Brown v Tommy Clarke (playing as we speak - in fact Tommy just won) with the winner playing either Pat Hunter or Danny Thomson. It will be a new winner this year with Ian Williams not being able to defend his championship due to a rib injury. Here's hoping he's fit for 2017 (not only because he's my nominated pairs partner ;-)
The were 11 in the Seniors Championship with Gerry Murphy, Don Sleigh, Tommy Clarke and Jim Peden through to the final four. In the Kingsley Cup we have Alan Smith, Pat Hunter, John Miller through to the semis with the final place between Tommy Clark and Jim Milligan to be decided. Presidents Cup has Pat Hunter, Tommy Clarke, Bill Shedden and Jim Peden through to the semis. In the Vice Presidents we have Jim Reynolds, John Anderson, Graeme Brown (Still in one at least) and the final place we have Alan Smith and Vi Robertson to battle for the honour of playing me... haha.. The final two tournaments are balloted pairs and nominated pairs both of which have their semis fixed up.
Ladies Tournaments
In the Ladies Championship there were 7 entries this year and we have Ann Young through to the final and awaits the winner of Kathy Peden and Charlotte McLay. In the Ronaldson Cup Charlotte McLay has made it through to the final and awaits either Kathy Peden or Ann Young in the final. The Ladies Balloted and Nominated Pairs are getting through their ties.
The weather is looking good for the next week so here's hoping all the ties get played out. Finals weekend is always a great couple of days. Here's hoping for some good weather and some fine bowls.
This week also marked the end of the Cathcart League. Our form has been up and down. Sometimes cleaning up but most of the time getting whitewashed. Such is bowls. This week was no different with 3 games against Castlemilk, all were defeats but with one plus point. The Castlemilk team could only send one team and therefore we got a home win by default. A silver lining.....
So what does this all tell you. Well on the one hand we have a small membership, but we are not the only ones and its showing with a number of clubs this year struggling to send out teams in the main trophies. We do need to grow the membership and we are on a drive to do so. Our wee plan is working with more members joining this year already but we will need to put the foot down as they say and get on with attracting more in the door.
It will take time but we are on a mission and i'm sure we will get there.
We're off to Methven next week for our annual friendly. Here's hoping for another great day out!
Cheers
