This week was the first committee meeting of the year. I have to say it was the best one I have been too so far. Everyone is gearing up for a New Year and a new Season. The hopes of a good summer, a champion that might get a little further in the big competitions and a few more step forwards in changing the image of our little club. You never know what might happen....
So the Committee. Made up of the President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Greens Convenor, Match Secretary and 4 Ordinary Members. All sitting round a table discussing all the things from letters we have received, the forthcoming fixture list, the electricity bill and the club polo shirt (i'll come back to that in later posts - that only took 9 months to decide upon). The big topic though was the AGM. Yes even the club the size of Hampden has its yearly foray into nominating a new committee, changing the constitution (well sometimes) and most importantly sorting out the fees for the following year. Here is where the fun starts.
Its obvious that the constitution hasn't been changed in a while. There are some interesting hangovers from the past: bowling sub committees that no one can remember ever meeting, AGM's having to be the second Thursday in February (much simpler having it on a day in February) and a limit on social membership (again that has been changed too - woohoo you interested?). So with a total of 6 changes going up for approval this is bordering on radical (in 8 years there has only been 6 changes made) so its a small sign that times are a changing.
More importantly we moved onto the future of the club and we are going to do a small presentation on all the things we are doing for the membership. Subjects of further posts i'm sure. Although the greatest venture yet is into the world of twitter. Yes we have our own twitter account @hampdenbowling. Wow we didn't even have a website until two years ago. There's even rumour of heading into Facebook world.
So as the AGM is in February, i'm off to print 57 letters. Yup thats how many people are part of our wee club - made up of full playing gents and ladies and our social members who like to keep their eye in on what is going on at Hampden. Do you know we used to have over 110 full members in the heyday of bowling. That was a bygone era for us. But the mission is to get back to those days. One wee fact that might surprise you is that up until the 1990s we didnt even have a bar....
