At the start of this year Mr Peden (The President) and I had a chat. What would make the year? His answer... we need to win a big trophy. Something to put us on the map. The history books say the last time we had a major trophy was in the 1980's, when Hampden had a Glasgow Ladies Champion. You have to go back to the 1950s to find a Hampden Glasgow Gents champion. What were the chances of our little club winning a major title in 2016...... It would have been interesting to see the odds.
But here our ladies have defied everybody. We have covered their progress through the rounds and this week they had the semi-final. After 14 ends it was 14-14. With one bowl left Hampden were lying 3 down and going out the competition. But Anne stood up and played a cracker taking the jack through to Kathy's bowl for the shot. Epic. But they didn't have long to celebrate being finalists. The next day they were out in the final. They played a blinder and won 18-4. A triumphant victory, which was summed up by the presentation party commenting on how unusual it was see our wee club crowned Glasgow Ladies Triples champions. We will take it as genuine surprise but to us it isn't. The Ladies have been fantastic and with each victory they were growing in confidence. Amazing achievement and they now go into next year representing the district. Fab stuff.
The other big event this week was the Hampden Invitation that was played today. 14 teams out to beat the weather forecast and have a great day of bowls at our wee club. There are a few pics that have gone up on Facebook and although rather windy the rain stayed off until the latter stages. Fairfield ran out champions in the end beating a Hampden team in the final. So big congratulations to them and thanks to all that took part to make it a great day.
What a week. The club is really starting to get a great vibe about it. Its important for a little club to have something to shout about. Who knows what our club can achieve. I met up with Laura from Bowls Scotland this week and there are a couple of things on the drawing board that might just add to our growing list of things to make you talk about Hampden Bowling Club..... You'll just need to wait and see :-)
