Ok where to start with this week's blog? Its close season so there's not many results to talk about. We could talk about the weather but to be honest between Frank, Gertrude and Imogen the weather has been utterly rubbish! So much so that even our regular Friday nights have been disrupted by it. So with the wind howling and the rain lashing (its Scotland after all), how do we warm things up a bit? Well its about time I talked about the bowling Club's place in the community. A heart warming place!
So how did it all begin. Its interesting to do a bit of digging to find out who had the vision to create a Bowling Club. For Hampden it was the adjacent flats that holds the secret. Within the same year of them being built the Bowling Club was established by the local residents. I have done a bit of digging and our first President of the Club was a Dr Garey J.P. So we had a Justice of the Peace in charge at the start. Do you think like most Committees need one of those??....
Then there is the facility that they provide. They can be used for meetings of the local residents. Where best than in the Bowling Club. It is free (we only open on a Friday during the winter), it is neutral (nobody has to volunteer one of their flats) and it is convenient - it is less that 10 yards away from the flats. So again - tick tick tick.
So what else do we use our little bowling club for? Well it has so much potential. The internet combined with an email account is so powerful. Up until recently the Club didn't use either and relied upon phone bookings. But with no full time secretary its almost impossible in this day and age. But since we have caught up a bit the club is starting to get a lot of enquiries. For example our proximity to Hampden enables us to attract many football parties. We're already up 3 different parties of Hibs fans for the League Cup Final in March. We have also a party coming for the Petrofac final in April. Oh and there is also the Scotland friendly with Denmark in March as well - although its on a Tuesday night but our tartan army regulars always manage to stop in for a cheeky pint before heading along to the game. We can't wait for a Saturday Scotland game - that will be a belter. Oh did I tell you England are coming to town in 2017. Now that will be a grand day! And its on a Saturday - happy days!
But its not just the footie. We are also hoping to play host to a small birthday party in the near future. Again with it being so close to the local residents - its ideal for a small function. We are hoping to do some refurbishment this year that will make it even more attractive for functions. Its all part of the offerings that the club can provide and support our mainstay of being a great wee bowling club.
So its been a wee trip through what we have to offer. A few other things are burning away. We have now been added to the www.trybowls.com website and our twitter account is properly flying now with over 50 followers - not bad for a months work. The weekly anthem from the Bowling Club playlist went out again today. Lovely Day by Bill Withers - a proper classic for a Sunday afternoon! Oh and we are looking at a new jacket to add to the club top that we have. So loads still going on!
Anyway better get back to my Sunday afternoon.
Enjoy the week!
