I have been asked to do the blog this week. The club is winding down towards the end of the season. There is definitely an autumnal nip in the air on the green so jumpers and coats were out in force for Saturday’s Crystal Maze match, the last organised competition before the Aussie Rules match on Closing Day.
There were five teams of four (rinks) out on the green for a round robin of four ends each game. The novelty was that the order of the team changed each game so everyone got a chance to be lead, second, third and skip during the afternoon. This caused quite a lot of confusion at the beginning. But it was nice to have a chance to try our hand in positions that we don’t usually play. Playing skip definitely gave me a better appreciation of how tricky it is to find your way through 15 other bowls. Needless to say I didn’t manage it.
The rain pretty much stayed off and towards the end the green was bathed in lovely evening sunlight. It was a fun afternoon with a nice friendly atmosphere between the teams. When the points were totted up four teams were tied on five points each (unfortunately my team was not one of them). Therefore, it had to go to a recount adding up the shots made by each team. The winning team was eventually declared to be: Carole Sleigh, Alec Rae, Anne Clelland and Pat Hunter. They each thanked the other three skips in their team. There was a nice tea provided by the ladies of the club and a raffle too – Gerry Murphy scooped the whisky main prize.
The next two dates for your dairies are the quiz on the evening of Friday 6th October starting at 8pm (I’ll be your quiz master) and then Closing Day on Saturday 7th October featuring the Australian scoring system. The green is still open for games in the coming weeks so if we have an Indian summer then there is time for a wee bounce game. Hope to see you at the club soon.
