So what was the best part of this week. The weather. Summer is here and the blue skies has been warmly greeted by the Bowlers. There are so many pictures going around Facebook with people out enjoying themselves on the bowling green. So what have we been up to? Well nearly every day there has been something on.
Firstly on Tuesday night we had Lorraine and Mark from Glasgow Sport who met up to give us lots of useful advice about how we can improve the club. This centred around a key idea we have been having which is to get volunteers into the club. There are a number of skills we don't have (or enough off) in the club from Marketing to Project Management and we need this to complete our ambitious #Restore1stHampden project. What we were recommended was to get on the Volunteer Bureau that they run and I have now all the forms and policies that we now need to have in place to make that happen. A few extra volunteers with some experience of this will be massive in helping us get there. We also got lots of other pointers and ideas that we need to get on with. I don't think people realise just what is involved in keeping all the administration up to date to keep a bowling club going. Never mind just the running of the place. It has made me so more appreciative of all the volunteers that dedicate so much of their time to their club!
On Wednesday night the first 10k of my big challenge was conquered. I headed off to Helensburgh to run on what was a beautiful night. There were over 400 runners and it was great to see so many people out and cheering you on. It was a privilege to run it. Although I have to say the first 5k were fine but the back 5k was a bit of a struggle. However I managed to run the whole thing and finished it in 57 minutes. So lots to improve on and I have 9 more to do just that :-) I have sent out the crowdfunding page and now the fundraising really starts. Lots of events to do that as well as the running. Its a massive challenge but heres hoping I get there.
Thursday night was back to the bowling. Jim, John, Ian and myself headed out to represent the Glasgow Secretaries and Treasurers and took on the Glasgow Presidents up at Linthouse Bowling Club. It was a great sunny evening and was a great laugh. There is so much banter at these events; especially when our squad ran out overall winners and took the trophy.
Friday night was quiz night. First Friday of each month and is getting better each time. It was a great evening with Ewe Love the Spiders running out winners. The squad from the Queens Park Supporters Club (did you guess?) were narrowly defeated on a tie breaker last time so this time they comfortably won by 5 points. But everyone enjoyed it and definitely one for your diary!
Back to bowls today and we hosted Scottish Ladies Ties. Its great to show off the club to bowlers from across the country. With the added sunshine and the major works over the winter - the club and green are looking good. The Hampden hospitality on show again. Which reminds me - our Trybowls and Ladies Who Bowl night is starting Monday 15th May from 6pm - come along and try this great game out!
